Half-Blood Heroes Take the Stage: The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical Strikes Darlington

There was a buzz of excitement at Darlington Hippodrome last night as The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical arrived in town, bringing with it a thunderbolt of energy, humour and heart. Based on the beloved books by Rick Riordan, this vibrant stage adaptation plunges audiences straight into a world where Greek mythology collides with modern teenage life.
For those unfamiliar with the story, we follow New York teenager Percy Jackson, who discovers that he is no ordinary kid — he’s the half-blood son of the sea god Poseidon. Suddenly thrust into a hidden world of gods, monsters and ancient rivalries, Percy must embark on a dangerous quest to prevent a war among the Olympian gods. Alongside loyal friends Annabeth and Grover, Percy’s journey becomes one of courage, friendship and self-belief.

Originally conceived by playwright Joe Tracz and composer Rob Rokicki as a 60-minute Off-Broadway production in 2014, the show has grown into a full two-hour theatrical adventure — and the expanded format allows the story’s humour, heart and high-stakes drama to shine.
Leading the charge is Vasco Emauz as Percy, delivering a performance brimming with teenage confusion, defiance and growing confidence. He captures Percy’s reluctant heroism perfectly, grounding the larger-than-life story with warmth and wit.
Kayna Montecillo shines as the fiercely intelligent Annabeth, bringing both determination and emotional depth to the role, while Cahir O’Neill’s Grover provides a delightful balance of nervous energy and steadfast loyalty. Their trio forms the beating heart of the production, and their chemistry keeps the audience firmly invested in every step of the quest.

Adding a deliciously mischievous twist to the proceedings is Danny Beard as Mr D, whose larger-than-life presence and razor-sharp comic timing inject plenty of laughs into the evening.
Visually, the show is a feast. Tim Deiling’s dynamic lighting design transforms the stage into shifting landscapes of myth and magic, while Ryan Dawson Laight’s inventive set and costume designs cleverly bring monsters, gods and demigods to life without losing the playful spirit of the story.
Under the assured direction of Lizzi Gee, the production moves with pace and confidence, balancing spectacle with heartfelt storytelling. The musical numbers, driven by Rokicki’s energetic score, carry the narrative forward with infectious enthusiasm.
At its core, The Lightning Thief is more than a mythological adventure. It’s a story about young people discovering their strength, learning to embrace what makes them different and standing up for what they believe in — even when adults underestimate them.

Packed with humour, action and plenty of mythical mayhem, this production is sure to delight long-time fans of Percy Jackson while welcoming newcomers into the world with open arms. Whether you’ve followed Percy’s adventures for years or are stepping into Camp Half-Blood for the very first time, this is a journey well worth taking.
