Last night at The Majestic Theatre, Darlington, we were treated to a joyful reminder of just how powerful musical theatre can be. The Show Tunes Must Go On is a vibrant, two-hour celebration of the past 50 years of musical theatre, performed by three hugely talented performers whose passion for the genre shines through every note.

What makes this show so special is the sheer versatility on display. The trio glide effortlessly from powerhouse belters to intimate, soul-searching ballads, from high-energy foot-stompers to timeless theatrical anthems. Each number is delivered with such skill and charisma that the audience is swept along on a musical journey through some of the best-loved songs in theatre.

Stand-out moments came thick and fast. Katie’s electrifying performance of “Don’t Lose Your Head” from Six was packed with attitude and vocal firepower. Joe delivered a brilliantly comic and energetic rendition of “The Smell of Rebellion” from Matilda the Musical, bringing the audience to delighted laughter. Meanwhile Mimi absolutely owned the stage with a sensational performance of “Sweet Transvestite” from The Rocky Horror Show, a moment of theatrical flair that had the room buzzing.

Yet while these highlights deserve special mention, the truth is that every number was performed with professionalism and heart. The performers demonstrate not only impressive vocal range but also a genuine love for the material, making the show accessible and engaging even for those who might not consider themselves regular musical theatre fans.

In a world that can feel increasingly heavy at times, evenings like this feel particularly valuable. The Show Tunes Must Go On is pure entertainment — joyful, uplifting, and packed with humour and warmth. For two hours, the audience is invited to forget the outside world and simply enjoy the magic of live performance.

The setting also plays a part in the magic. The Majestic Theatre proves to be the perfect venue for a show like this: intimate enough that every seat feels close to the action, yet still retaining the atmosphere and acoustics of a much larger theatre. It’s a space that allows performers and audience to truly connect.

All three performers are clearly of a calibre worthy of leading roles in the West End, which makes the opportunity to see them perform together in smaller venues an absolute treat. If this show is coming anywhere near you, it’s not to be missed.
