Written by Gary Kitching and directed with flair and warmth by Jacob Anderton, this year’s pantomime is a joyous celebration of tradition, community and sheer theatrical fun.

From the opening moments, the audience is welcomed into a world that feels instantly familiar and wonderfully inclusive. This is pantomime done properly — full of laughter, participation and local flavour, with plenty of knowing nods to Durham life that bring an added sense of connection and pride. The atmosphere is electric, with families fully engaged and performers clearly relishing every moment on stage.

The cast is the true beating heart of this production, delivering performances brimming with energy, chemistry and generosity. Kieron Michael leads the show with a hugely likeable turn as Jack, combining heroism with an easy charm that keeps audiences firmly on his side. Jude Nelson is a constant delight as Muddles, working the crowd effortlessly with sharp comic timing, physical humour and a natural rapport that has children laughing and adults grinning throughout.

Sarah Bulmer is a panto powerhouse as Mrs Tinkler, commanding the stage with confidence, warmth and impeccable comedic delivery. Her larger-than-life performance draws some of the biggest laughs of the night. Adam Donaldson clearly revels in his role as Professor Hangclaw, striking the perfect balance between menace and mischief, and encouraging gloriously loud boos at every appearance. Lucy Davis brings heart and humour to Bridget, grounding the story with sincerity and warmth, while Susie Barrett’s Bronwen adds sparkle, strength and a sense of fun that completes a wonderfully cohesive ensemble.

Behind the scenes, the creative team ensures the magic never falters. Gabrielle Ball’s musical direction and arrangements fill the theatre with rousing, sing-along songs that have the audience clapping along in no time. Helen West’s choreography keeps the stage fizzing with dazzling dance routines, executed with precision and infectious enthusiasm. Emily Baxendale’s costume designs are a standout feature — bold, beautiful and bursting with colour, they elevate the production and add visual spectacle at every turn.

Packed with hilarious gags, expertly timed slapstick and plenty of playful local references, Jack and the Beanstalk delivers laughs from start to finish. Durham Gala has produced a pantomime that feels proudly traditional yet fresh and exciting, making it a perfect festive treat.

For families weighing up their Christmas theatre choices, this joyful, community-spirited production is an unmissable reminder of just how special pantomime can be.
